very true, its like in the first back to the future (clock tower scene) when Doc pats Marty on the shoulders and smiles and says 'Dont Worry!' but Marty isnt worried about himself, hes worried about doc not reading the letter and getting shot. I always knew MJF was a great actor but his ability to act stressed when he must make it back to Twin/Lone Pines mall to save doc is brilliant. That similar kind of edge you are talking about
